First came the freezing of Mateo’s bank accounts. When he tried to access the hidden funds to pay for a new luxury car he had been eyeing, the transaction was flagged, and the account was locked. Then, the official court summons was delivered to the Rivera household.
Through my lawyer, I heard about the absolute chaos that erupted inside the house. Doña Carmen had screamed at the process servers, claiming it was all a mistake, while Lucía had panicked, realizing that their greed had finally caught up with them. Mateo tried to call me dozens of times, his messages shifting from angry demands to pathetic pleas for forgiveness, begging me to settle outside of court. I blocked his number and let my legal team handle everything.
When the final court hearing took place, Mateo and his mother sat across from us, their faces pale and their proud postures completely shattered. They had to agree to all of our terms to avoid criminal charges for fraud. I was awarded my full, rightful share of the marital assets, forcing Mateo to sell his share of the family business to pay me what he owed.
Throughout the entire process, Don Ernesto never appeared in court, but I knew his quiet hand was guiding the resolution. He had remained at home, maintaining his silent routine, while his greedy family crumbled under the weight of their own actions.
The day before I was set to board the bus back to Puebla, I walked past the Rivera house one last time. I didn’t stop, and I didn’t knock. But as I passed the iron gate, I saw Don Ernesto sitting in his usual chair in the courtyard, holding his newspaper.
He looked up and met my gaze through the iron bars. He didn’t wave, and he didn’t smile, but he gave me a slow, firm nod of approval. I pressed my hand to my heart, nodding back to convey the immense gratitude I could never fully put into words.
Turning away, I boarded the bus to Puebla with a light heart and a clear mind. When I arrived at my new home, I opened the wooden doors to find a beautiful courtyard bathed in the warm afternoon sun, exactly as Don Ernesto had described. I breathed in the scent of the orange blossoms, knowing that my life was finally my own again.
