The Hidden Will
My heart hammered against my ribs as I stepped into the shade of a large, blooming jacaranda tree, seeking shelter from the intense Guadalajara sun. I pulled the heavy brown envelope from the plastic wrap. The texture of the old paper was rough, and my fingers shook so much I nearly dropped it onto the dusty pavement. I reached inside and pulled out a stack of documents, on top of which lay a hand-written letter in elegant, cursive handwriting. I recognized the script immediately. It belonged to Don Ernesto.
I began to read, his quiet, gravelly voice echoing in my mind with every word.
“Dear Valeria,” the letter began. “If you are reading this, it means you have finally left that house, and for that, I am both deeply sorry and immensely relieved. For five years, I have watched you endure the cruelty of my wife, Carmen, and the sheer malice of my daughter, Lucía. Worse of all, I watched my son, Mateo, diminish into a cowardly man who did not know how to value the treasure he had in you. You might wonder why I never spoke up, why I remained silent in my corner of the patio, tending to my plants while they tore your spirit down. The truth is, Valeria, I am a tired old man who lost his voice in this house a long time ago. Fighting Carmen openly would have only brought more wrath down upon your head, and it would have forced them to hide their schemes even deeper. I chose to play the fool so I could watch them closely. I chose silence so I could gather the truth.”
Tears blurred my vision as I wiped my eyes and kept reading.
“Mateo convinced you that the business was failing and that there were no assets to divide in this divorce. He made you believe you were leaving with nothing because nothing existed. He lied to you, Valeria. For the past eighteen months, Mateo has been quietly transferring your joint savings, along with the profits from the family business that you helped build, into a private offshore account registered under his mother’s maiden name. They planned this. They wanted to discard you like trash once they had secured the funds, leaving you penniless and broken. But they forgot that I still hold the master keys to the family registry and the business archives.”
My breath hitched. I flipped through the papers beneath the letter. There were official bank statements, certified transaction receipts, and forensic accounting summaries detailing every single transfer Mateo had made. It was an undeniable paper trail of financial fraud……
