The Secret Under the Mattress

Part Two of the Story… 👇

A Hidden Truth

My fingers trembled as I held up the heavy weight of the hospital mattress, my eyes scanning the dark space beneath. I had expected to find medical documents, perhaps a hidden stash of experimental pills, or even a diary detailing a truth he was too afraid to tell me. Instead, my gaze fell upon a thick, pristine manila envelope taped securely to the metal slatted frame, alongside a small, silver velvet jewelry box that looked entirely out of place in this sterile environment.

With my heart hammering against my ribs like a trapped bird, I carefully peeled the tape away from the envelope, trying desperately not to tear the paper or make a sound. The hum of the hospital monitors and the faint rustle of the bathroom door on its hinges kept me on high alert. I slipped the envelope and the silver box out, letting the heavy mattress drop back down with a soft, muffled thud.

I sat on the edge of the visitor’s chair, my back to the bathroom door, and opened the envelope first. Inside was a collection of printed medical articles, a series of emails between Ben and a specialist based in a leading research hospital in Boston, and a signed consent form for an international clinical trial.

I stared at the documents, my vision blurring as I tried to make sense of the dense medical jargon. It was an immunotherapy trial targeting his exact type of aggressive cancer. The dates on the emails started just three weeks ago, shortly after his initial devastating diagnosis. As I flipped through the pages, a handwritten note from his primary oncologist fell into my lap. It read: Ben, the board has approved your entry into the trial. Because of the extreme risks and the intense physical toll of the experimental phase, we must proceed immediately. I respect your wish to keep this from her until the wedding is secure. You wanted her to marry you for who you are, not out of a desperate hope for a miracle. But you must tell her the truth before the first session tomorrow.……….
