Morning Lake School Bus Mystery
Lana stood frozen in the narrow aisle of the rusted yellow bus, the cool forest air carrying the damp smell of earth and decay through the open emergency doorway. Sunlight filtered through the dense canopy of trees above the trench, casting long, geometric shadows across the dirt-covered floor. Her flashlight beam remained fixed on the class list taped neatly beside the steering column. Miss Delaney’s rounded, precise penmanship looked as fresh as if it had been written yesterday, save for the bold red letters smeared across the bottom of the paper: “We never made it to Morning Lake.”
Beside her, Chief Investigator Mark Miller stepped over a fallen panel of interior ceiling trim. The metal groaned beneath his boots, a hollow sound that echoed in the excavation pit outside, where heavy machinery sat idling in stunned silence. The construction workers stood along the ridge of dirt above, staring down into the trench they had cleared only hours before.
“Fourteen children, one driver, and Eleanor Delaney,” Miller muttered, running a gloved hand along the faded green vinyl of the driver’s seat. “If they didn’t make it to the lake, and they aren’t inside this bus, where did fifteen people go in the middle of a dense forest without leaving a single trace?”
Lana didn’t answer immediately. She crouched down near the driver’s pedestal, shining her flashlight into the dark space beneath the foot pedals. Tucked deep behind the rusted brake assembly was a small object wrapped tightly in thick, black oilcloth. The wrapping had preserved whatever lay inside from forty years of moisture and soil pressure.
Carefully reaching into the gap, Lana pulled the package free. She unrolled the heavy fabric on the flat surface of the dashboard. Inside lay a leather-bound teacher’s journal, its brass clasp tarnished but intact……
