Part 5: The New Command
General Vance didn’t even need to review the footage. He looked at the trembling colonel, then down at the severed braid resting in the dust, and finally at the young woman standing before him—unbroken, dignified, and completely unshaken.
“Colonel,” General Vance said, his voice echoing across the training grounds like a hammer blow. “You are hereby relieved of your command, effective immediately. Surrender your sidearm to the military police and report to the garrison headquarters for pending court-martial proceedings.”
A collective, muffled gasp rippled through the company. Two military police officers stepped forward, stripping the colonel of his rank insignia and sidearm before escorting him away in front of the very soldiers he had sought to intimidate.
General Vance turned back to Ana. He bent down, picked up the dark braid from the dirt, brushed the dust off it with deep respect, and placed it gently into her hands.
“A real soldier doesn’t measure their strength by their appearance, Recruit Ana,” General Vance said loudly, addressing the entire company. “They measure it by their courage to protect their comrades when those in power lose their way.”
He stepped back and delivered a sharp, crisp salute to the young woman. Across the courtyard, every single soldier in the company—from the lieutenants to the newest recruits—instantly snapped into formation, delivering a synchronized, thunderous salute to Ana.
Six months later, Ana stood at the head of the very same training grounds, wearing the silver bars of a lieutenant. Her hair was growing back short and neat, her posture commanding, her eyes filled with the same unyielding light. She hadn’t just survived the colonel’s cruelty; she had earned the absolute respect of an entire division, proving that true authority is never cut away—it is forged in honor.
