Part 4: The Inspection of Honor
“Sir, no,” Ana spoke out, her voice calm, steady, and loud enough for every soldier in the company to hear. “I broke rank during field exercises to administer emergency trauma care to Private Miller, who suffered a fractured spine during an unsupervised jump drill.”
General Vance’s eyes narrowed dangerously as he looked back at the colonel. “Is this true?”
“She disobeyed a direct order to stay in formation!” the colonel argued frantically, sweat pouring down his neck. “She is a recruit! She has no authority to question field command!”
“I do not require field command authority to enforce safety regulations, Colonel,” Ana replied smoothly. She reached into her inner coat pocket and pulled out a small, waterproof military-grade recording device. “And according to Article 14 of the Military Code of Conduct, any officer who deliberately denies medical evacuation to an injured soldier faces immediate court-martial.”
The colonel froze. He had forgotten that as an academy honors graduate specializing in field logistics, Ana wore a standard-issue tactical body camera during every drill—a detail he had overlooked in his rush to punish her.
Ana handed the device directly to General Vance. “The complete audio and video log of the drill, including the private’s injury and the colonel’s refusal to allow medical transport, has already been auto-synced to the division’s central server.”
