Without uttering a single word or breaking eye contact, Ana slowly knelt on the dusty ground. The company watched in stunned silence, expecting her to gather her severed braid in defeat. Instead, she picked up the heavy shears that the colonel had carelessly tossed onto the dirt beside her boots.
A sudden, sharp tension rippled through the ranks. Two lieutenants reflexively reached for their holsters, assuming the humiliated recruit was about to lash out. The colonel stood his ground, his chest puffed out, a cold sneer forming on his lips as he waited for her to ruin her career with a foolish act of violence.
Ana didn’t raise the shears against the colonel.
Instead, she brought the heavy blades to the remaining tufts of dark hair on her scalp. With precise, deliberate, and unwavering cuts, she began shearing the rest of her hair clean off. Dry clumps fell onto her shoulders and onto her polished combat boots. She didn’t use a mirror, nor did her hands shake for a fraction of a second. She methodically shaved her head down to the skin right there in the blinding sun.
When she finished, she dropped the shears into the dust, wiped the remaining hair from her collar, and snapped into a flawless, rigid military salute.
Her eyes were completely dry, burning with a calm, terrifying intensity that made the colonel’s sneer instantly vanish. By taking the shears into her own hands, she had transformed his public humiliation into a deliberate act of complete devotion. She hadn’t been stripped of her hair; she had shed it like armor.
“Recruit Ana,” she announced, her voice echoing clearly across the silent courtyard, “reporting for duty, sir.”
