The silence in the ultrasound room was so dense you could hear the soft, rhythmic echo of the baby’s heartbeat pulsing through the machine’s speakers. Diego stood frozen by the doorway, his hands jammed into his pockets, trying to maintain an air of arrogant superiority. Paola remained half-hidden behind his shoulder, her arms crossed, a smug smile playing on her lips.
“I don’t need to see anything on your screen, Doctor,” Diego sneered, motioning toward me with a dismissive flick of his wrist. “I came to drop off the final divorce settlement papers with her. The dates will prove she was stepping out on me.”
Dr. Salinas didn’t flinch. She adjusted her glasses, brought up a split-screen view on the high-definition monitor, and pointed directly to two distinct areas on the ultrasound feed.
“Mr. Diego,” Dr. Salinas said, her voice dropping into a razor-sharp, professional tone. “First of all, your wife is not four or five weeks pregnant. She is currently at eleven weeks and three days. That means this pregnancy was conceived before your vasectomy took place two months ago.”
Diego’s breath caught in his throat. The arrogance on his face cracked instantly, a sudden flash of panic crossing his eyes. “What? No… that’s impossible! She told me—”
“She told you when she tested positive, not when she conceived,” Dr. Salinas interrupted cleanly. “Furthermore, vasectomies require up to twelve weeks and multiple post-op semen analyses to confirm a zero sperm count. But more importantly, Mr. Diego… look at the second sac on this screen.”
Paola leaned forward, her eyes narrowing as she looked at the second shadow on the monitor.
“Your wife is carrying twins,” Dr. Salinas stated, pointing to the two clear, steady heartbeats. “And based on the developmental markers, both babies share the exact same conception window—weeks before you went into that clinic.”
