Part 2
But in the blink of an eye, everything changed!
A tiny, high-pitched squeak echoed from the lowest branch of the giant fig tree directly above Barnaby’s head. 🐒
The dramatic pose froze instantly.
Barnaby didn’t lower his hand, nor did he relax his chest.
Instead, his left eye slowly cracked open, casting a sharp, laser-focused glare upward through his dark brow.
Sitting on the branch, covered from head to toe in bright orange papaya pulp, was little Pip.
Pip was a three-month-old orphan who had joined the troop just weeks before.
He was tiny, hopelessly clumsy, and entirely unaware of jungle hierarchy.
In his tiny, sticky paws, he was holding the very last chunk of the golden papaya.
His small belly was round as a balloon, distended from consuming three times his weight in stolen fruit. 🥭
Pip looked down at the mighty silverback, wiped a glob of sweet juice onto his own nose, and let out a loud, echoey hiccup.
The entire audience of animals held a collective breath.
Everyone expected Barnaby to rise like an angry thunderstorm, to shake the trees and reclaim his domain with a terrifying roar.
They expected the king to punish the little thief who had ruined his morning and shattered his pride.
Instead, the stern lines around Barnaby’s mouth began to soften ever so slightly.
His dramatic hand-on-heart posture wasn’t a prayer for vengeance at all.
It was a desperate, hilarious attempt to keep himself from bursting into full-blown laughter. 😂
He was trying so hard to maintain his intimidating reputation, but the sheer absurdity of the moment was breaking him down.
The legendary, terrifying silverback was sitting in the mud, pretending to be a tragic hero, all because a tiny baby had tricked him.
Barnaby slowly let his skyward hand fall back down to the earth.
He brought both hands to his face, covering his dark snout as his broad shoulders shook uncontrollably.
The juvenile chimps exchanged confused glances, still not realizing that the great ruler was silently giggling into his palms.
Pip, utterly clueless about the danger he had been in, slid down the trunk of the tree with zero caution.
He landed with a soft plop directly in front of Barnaby’s crossed legs.
The baby held out his tiny, sticky hand, offering the final, sloppy piece of fruit to the giant sitting before him.
