PART 3: THE DEMANDS OF INDEPENDENCE
Scott’s jaw dropped in absolute shock as he looked down at the official legal notice removing my name from the apartment lease.
“You can’t just leave me like this!” he shouted, his voice cracking with panic. “I have studio rent due next week, and I can’t afford this place alone!”
“You reminded me last night that I don’t own you,” I replied, my voice steady and free of anger. “So I am giving you the independence you asked for.”
He rushed forward, trying to grab my hands, desperately promising that he would change, buy a ring, and step up immediately.
But after nine years of empty promises, his desperate words felt hollow, like a song he was playing just to keep his comfortable life intact.
I picked up my remaining suitcase and walked past him toward the front door, where a moving van was waiting outside on the street.
