THE UNBREAKABLE BOUNDARY

Scott and I had been together for almost a decade.

When we first met, he was a gifted musician chasing a career that always seemed just out of reach. I believed in him completely.

Since music didn’t provide steady income, I became the practical one. I worked full-time, handled most of our expenses, paid the rent when he was short, and encouraged him whenever he wanted to quit.

I never kept score. I honestly thought we were investing in the same future.

Scott kept promising that once he became successful, we’d finally get married, live comfortably, and have everything we’d talked about for years.

So whenever friends or relatives asked why there still wasn’t a ring, I defended him.

Then one night, I was buried in work and facing an important deadline the next morning. I asked him for one simple thing: throw away the takeout containers and put the dishes in the dishwasher before going to bed.

Scott didn’t even take his eyes off the television. He sighed as if I’d asked for something unreasonable, then said: “Stop acting like you own me. You’re NOT my wife, so stop expecting me to act like your husband.”

I couldn’t speak. After nine years of paying bills, supporting his ambitions, and waiting for the future he’d promised me, that sentence told me exactly how little he valued everything I’d done.

As I lay awake that night, I realized I couldn’t keep living the way we had been. By morning, I’d made up my mind.

The next day, Scott came home expecting everything to be exactly as he’d left it. Instead, he froze in the doorway, unable to believe what he was seeing.
