Part Two of the Story… 👇
Service Dog
The air in the gym had grown so thin it felt like I was breathing through a straw. When my fingers finally gripped the zipper of the black duffel, the sound of the metal teeth separating was deafening in the silence. Trent didn’t yell. He didn’t fight back. He simply collapsed, his knees hitting the hardwood with a dull thud as if the tension had been physically siphoned out of his legs.
I pulled the bag open, and the first thing I saw wasn’t contraband or anything overtly dangerous. It was a chaotic mess of high-end, stolen electronics—tablets, expensive watches, and a stack of school-issued laptops that had been reported missing over the last three months. But tucked underneath a folded letterman jacket, nestled in a side pocket that Buster had specifically targeted, was a heavy, unmarked manila envelope.
I pulled it out, and the contents spilled onto the floor. They were photos. Not the kind you take at a homecoming dance. These were surreptitious, high-angle shots taken from inside the school’s administrative offices, showing sensitive student files, security alarm codes, and a detailed map of the school’s digital network. My blood ran cold. This wasn’t just a bullying incident; this was a level of premeditated malice that reached far beyond the gym floor.
Buster remained perfectly still, his eyes fixed on the envelope as if he were still guarding it, his duty not yet satisfied. Leo, watching the exchange with a mixture of confusion and dawning realization, crawled slowly toward me. He didn’t know what was in the documents, but he saw the look on my face, and he saw the way Trent, a boy who thought he owned the building, was currently staring at the floor with the hollow eyes of someone who had just watched his entire future evaporate.
