THE SHATTERED TRUST

PART 3: THE FAMILY CONFRONTATION

We drove back to the family estate late that evening, the heavy silence in the car filled with unspoken dread. The grand house was fully illuminated, filled with laughter and the clinking of glasses as Santiago’s upcoming wedding was being celebrated with the bride’s prominent family. Uncle Arnulfo was at the head of the table, holding a glass of expensive wine, while Rafael stood beside him, beaming with pride.

When I pushed the double doors open and escorted Don Eusebio into the dining room, the room fell completely silent. Claudia gasped in horror, dropping her fork onto her porcelain plate. Rafael’s face drained of all color, his eyes darting frantically between his father, me, and the thick Manila folder tucked tightly under my arm.

“What is the meaning of this?” Uncle Arnulfo sneered, standing up and adjusting his jacket. “Mónica, how dare you bring him here during an important family gathering? We explicitly told you he was to stay away!” Rafael stepped forward, trying to grab my arm to pull me out of the room. “You’re ruining everything, Mónica. Leave now!”

I slammed the Manila folder onto the center of the dining table, knocking over a crystal glass. “The only thing ruined in this house is its morality,” I said, my voice echoing off the high ceilings. “Five years ago, Don Eusebio didn’t steal a single peso from those 27 corn farmers. He went to prison to cover up a crime committed by his own blood.”

I opened the folder and threw the nine receipts directly at Uncle Arnulfo and Rafael. The bride’s father picked up one of the documents, his eyebrows furrowing as he read the clear signature and bank timestamps. “Rafael Castañeda Montiel,” the man read aloud, staring at my husband in disgust. “This is a confession of fraud.”
