PART 2: THE FORGOTTEN EVIDENCE
We drove in complete silence toward a modest apartment on the outskirts of the neighboring district. My heart was pounding against my ribs as Don Eusebio directed me down narrow streets. When we finally stopped, a thin, exhausted young man stepped out of the shadows of the doorway. It was Iván, looking like a ghost of the vibrant brother-in-law I once knew.
Without saying a word, Iván handed his father an old, dusty metal lockbox. Don Eusebio took a deep breath, opened it, and pulled out a stack of yellowed papers tied with a faded rubber band. “Mónica, you are an accountant,” Don Eusebio said, his hands trembling violently. “Look at these nine receipts. I kept them hidden in my tool shed before the police arrested me, and Iván retrieved them.”
I took the papers and spread them across the car hood. They were bank transaction slips from five years ago, detailing the exact movement of the missing corn farmers’ funds. As my professional eyes scanned the signatures at the bottom of each authorization form, my breath caught in my throat. The handwriting wasn’t Don Eusebio’s, nor was it an unfamiliar stranger’s.
Every single signature belonged to my husband, Rafael, with Uncle Arnulfo listed as the primary beneficiary. The realization struck me like a physical blow, leaving me dizzy and nauseous. Don Eusebio had willingly taken the blame and spent five solitary years in a cold cell to shield his eldest son from a lifetime in prison.
“He told me he would lose his family if he went to jail,” Don Eusebio whispered, tears rolling down his weathered cheeks. “I sacrificed my freedom so my grandchildren would have a father. But seeing how Rafael treats you, and how he treated his mother on her deathbed… I realize my sacrifice only nourished a monster.”
