THE SHADOW OF DEVOTION

PART 3: UNCOVERING THE TRACE

An hour later, a soft knock echoed at my hotel room door. I opened it to find Matthew looking pale, disheveled, and holding a thick, weathered binder against his chest.

He didn’t try to touch me or offer excuses; he simply walked over to the desk and laid the binder down, opening it to reveal years of legal documents, bank statements, and medical records.

“The trap wasn’t meant to hurt you, Sarah,” Matthew said, his eyes glassy with emotion. “The trap was set for your uncle.”

My jaw dropped as I looked at the top document—a fraudulent trust agreement dated back to the year my father unexpectedly passed away during our sophomore year of high school.

“Your uncle systematically stole your family’s inheritance and forced your mother into debt,” Matthew explained, his voice shaking with intense conviction.

“Back in high school, I overheard him celebrating how he took everything from you. I swore that day I would spend my life getting it all back.”
