THE SHADOW OF DEVOTION

PART 2: THE REASON BEHIND THE WORDS

I ran out of the house, my sight blurred by heavy tears, clutching the wrapped anniversary watch so tightly the corners of the box dug into my palm.

I drove aimlessly around town for hours, every memory of our fifteen-year friendship flashing through my mind like a cruel illusion.

Was our entire childhood a lie? Was every gentle gesture, every late-night phone call, and every shared dream just part of a calculated game?

Unable to face him in our home, I booked a room at a quiet hotel near the harbor, locking myself inside while my phone buzzed incessantly with missed calls from Matthew.

When dusk settled, I finally answered his twentieth call, my voice cold and trembling as I confronted him with the exact words I had overheard in the living room.

Silence fell over the line, long and heavy, before Matthew let out a ragged breath that sounded less like guilt and more like sheer, crushing exhaustion.

“You weren’t supposed to hear that, Sarah,” he whispered softly. “Please… stay where you are. I’m coming to explain everything.”
