THE SECRET AT GRUPO MONTEVERDE

PART 2: THE RECKONING BEGINS

I walked directly to the parking garage, retrieved my private secondary phone, and dialed the personal number of Don Bernardo, my father’s most trusted legal counsel for over thirty years.

“Valeria, child,” the old lawyer said, his voice instantly softening. “Is everything alright? You sound distant.”

“Bernardo, I need an immediate, quiet audit of all Grupo Monteverde assets,” I replied, my tone devoid of any hesitation. “And prepare the documents to revoke Alejandro’s power of attorney.”

There was a sharp intake of breath on the other end of the line, followed by the sound of papers rustling as Don Bernardo recognized the shift in my demeanor.

“It will be done by morning,” he confirmed gravely. “Is there anything else you need?”

“Yes,” I murmured, staring at my reflection in the car mirror, tracing the faint red outline on my cheek. “Call an extraordinary board meeting for tomorrow at nine. Make sure every primary shareholder is present.”

When I returned home late that evening, Alejandro was sitting in the dimly lit living room, swirling a glass of whiskey with an unreadable expression on his face.
