I became a single mother when my son, Jason, was only three years old.
After his father passed away, I promised myself that no matter how hard life got, Jason would have every opportunity I never had. I worked two jobs, gave up my vacations, and spent every extra cent on his future instead of my own.
I never expected anything in return. Seeing him grow into a good man was enough for me.
Years passed. Jason graduated from university, moved to another city to build his career, and became increasingly busy with his own life.
He visited me less and less, and although I missed him deeply, I kept telling myself that this was precisely what I had worked so hard for. We still spoke from time to time, and every promotion and achievement filled me with pride.
Then, one afternoon, he appeared unexpectedly at my door. I was so happy to see him that I hugged him before he even stepped inside.
For a moment, everything felt like the old times. We drank coffee, talked about his work, laughed remembering old times, and I realized how much I had missed those moments.
Then his expression changed. He set his coffee down, looked me in the eyes, and revealed the true reason for his visit.
“Mom, you live alone in a house that is worth more than you will ever need,” he said. “Move into a nursing home, let me sell it, and stop standing in the way of my future. You don’t need a whole house anymore.”
I sat in silence, trying to convince myself that I hadn’t just heard my own son say those words. It hurt more than I can describe, but I simply nodded.
I packed my things in silence, moved into the home, and let Jason believe he had gotten exactly what he wanted.
Then, just a few days later, my phone rang. Jason was screaming so loudly that I had to pull the phone away from my ear. “How could you do this to me?!”
