David and I had been married for fifteen years. We had two children and a marriage filled with love.
Then the doctor gave us devastating news: “Stage 4. We can’t save him.” David was slowly dying, but I knew his illness wasn’t his only secret.
One evening, he handed me a photograph of a quiet sixteen-year-old girl. “Her name is Grace. Please adopt her before I die.”
My stomach dropped. “Is she your daughter?” He closed his eyes. “I’ll explain later. Just bring her home.”
I loved him too much to refuse. Grace arrived carrying only a faded backpack and a plastic bag of clothes. Our children welcomed her, she helped me with everything, and David smiled whenever she was nearby.
Yet the two of them kept disappearing into his room. Once I heard Grace crying, but whenever I asked questions, David always answered, “You’ll understand later.”
Two weeks later, he died.
The day after his funeral, Grace entered my bedroom. “There’s something you need to know,” she whispered. “You have no idea who your husband really was.”
“My husband just died. Can’t this wait?” I asked. She slowly reached behind her back.
Then she revealed something that made every muscle in my body freeze. “This can’t wait. David made me promise I’d explain everything only after he was gone.”
