Part 4: The Unmasking
Gregory chuckled nervously, looking around at the watching crowd. “Your subsidiary? Mr. Sterling, there must be a misunderstanding. Vance Logistics is my company. I built it from the ground up!”
“You built nothing, Gregory,” a clear, soft, yet commanding voice spoke from the doorway behind Arthur Sterling.
The crowd gasped as Madeline walked into the ballroom.
She wasn’t wearing her simple coat or comfortable flats anymore. She wore an elegant, custom-tailored emerald gown that cradled her eight-month belly, her dark hair styled in sophisticated waves, diamonds shimmering at her neck. Standing beside her was Diane, her mother—who was no longer wearing her simple cardigan, but a tailored Chanel suit.
Ashley’s champagne glass trembled in her hand. “Madeline?! What are you doing here?! You were banned from this venue! Security, remove her!”
“Security works for the building, Ashley,” Madeline said smoothly, taking a slow, graceful step into the room. “And as of four o’clock this afternoon, Sterling Global Holdings acquired the master lease for this entire hotel.”
“What are you talking about?!” Gregory shouted, his face turning red with sudden, mounting panic. “What does Sterling Global have to do with you?!”
Arthur Sterling stepped beside Madeline, placing a proud, protective hand on her shoulder.
“Allow me to introduce my daughter, Gregory,” Arthur Sterling announced to the entire ballroom. “Dr. Madeline Sterling-Hayes. Sole heiress to Sterling Global Holdings.”
A wave of shock rippled through the room. Guests began whispering frantically.
Gregory felt his knees go weak. “Daughter…? No… no! Her last name was Hayes! Her father was a high school teacher who died when she was young!”
“My biological father, Arthur Sterling, and my mother separated before I was born,” Madeline explained coldly, looking down at her ex-husband with absolute detachment. “I chose to live a modest life under my stepfather’s name because I wanted to build a career on my own merits. I wanted a husband who loved me for who I was, not for my family’s billions.”
