Part 3: The Gala of Gold and Lies
By 6:00 p.m. that same evening, the grand ballroom of the Four Seasons Hotel in downtown Seattle was glowing with crystal chandeliers, white orchids, and three hundred of the city’s most influential business figures.
Having finalized his divorce that morning, Gregory had organized an immediate, extravagant wedding ceremony and reception to celebrate his union with Ashley. He wanted the world to see that he was rising, stepping into the upper elite alongside Ashley’s wealthy, influential family.
Ashley stood in an exquisite, ivory silk gown, holding a glass of champagne, basking in the admiration of the crowd.
“To Gregory and Ashley!” a senior board member toasted, raising his glass. “To the newest power couple in Seattle logistics!”
Gregory beamed, pulling Ashley close. “Thank you, everyone! Tonight represents a fresh start. A complete severance from the past and an ascent into the future!”
Suddenly, the heavy double doors at the back of the ballroom swung open.
The room grew quiet as a tall, distinguished man in a dark charcoal suit walked in, accompanied by two legal representatives carrying thick leather briefcases. It was Arthur Sterling—the reclusive, multi-billion-dollar chairman of Sterling Global Holdings, the largest logistics conglomerate on the West Coast.
Gregory’s eyes lit up. He had been trying to secure a meeting with Sterling for two years to save Vance Logistics from bankruptcy, but Sterling had always refused his calls.
“Mr. Sterling!” Gregory exclaimed, rushing forward with his hand outstretched. “What an honor! I didn’t know you would grace our wedding reception with your presence!”
Arthur Sterling didn’t shake Gregory’s hand. He stood with his arms folded behind his back, his expression cold as winter ice.
“I didn’t come to celebrate your wedding, Mr. Vance,” Sterling said, his deep voice echoing across the quiet ballroom. “I came to audit my subsidiary.”
