My hands trembled violently as the paper rattled in my grip. I stared at the line written in Liam’s neat, familiar cursive: Please, don’t trust your sister.
My boss, Marcus, stepped back toward the office door, locking it with a sharp, heavy click. “Emily,” he whispered, his eyes dark with anxiety. “Liam spent the last three months of his life uncovering a systematic embezzlement ring within our regional logistics division. He realized someone was using offshore shell accounts to launder funds—and laundering those funds through your sister’s private accounting firm.”
“No…” I choked out, tears blurring my vision as I pulled out the bank statements from the thick envelope. “Nora would never do that. She stood beside me at the funeral! She helped me make dinner for my kids every single night this month!”
“Look at the dates, Emily,” Marcus urged gently, pointing to the certified financial ledger.
The transfers weren’t just made during his lifetime; three massive wire transfers of fifty thousand dollars each had been processed after Liam’s death—drawn directly from Liam’s private severance accounts using forged power-of-attorney signatures. Signatures that required my sister’s notarization seal.
Liam’s note continued on the second page:
Em, Nora isn’t working alone. She introduced me to a man named Victor six months ago, claiming he was a private investor. Victor is the one who cut my brake lines, Em. I found out too late. If I don’t make it home tonight, take the thumb drive attached to the back of this frame and go straight to the State Attorney’s Integrity Unit. Do not go back to our house. They are watching the front door.
