Part 4: The Silent Witness
“I didn’t just ask questions, Alejandro,” I said, my voice suddenly stopping its shake as a sharp, cold survival instinct took over. “I called the police department in Monterrey ten minutes ago.”
Alejandro froze, his hand pausing inside his jacket. “You’re lying. You were too panicked to make a call.”
“Check your phone,” I said, pointing toward his pocket. “The local precinct has already run the serial numbers on those offshore transfer slips. I emailed the forensic photos of Elena’s missing person report and the chemical bottle directly to Detective Reyes before you walked up those stairs.”
Outside the house, the faint, rising wail of police sirens began to echo through the quiet neighborhood, growing louder and closer with every passing second.
Alejandro’s face turned an ash-gray color. He looked down at the cut mattress, then at the open bedroom door, realizing that the web of lies he had carefully constructed across three cities had completely collapsed in less than an hour.
“Lucía, please,” he stammered, stepping back, his previous confidence vanishing as he reached out a trembling hand. “We can fix this. I did everything for our future. I can transfer the accounts to your name—”
“Don’t touch me,” I said, stepping past him toward the hallway as heavy boots slammed against the front porch below, followed by the loud, authoritative pounding of the police breaking through the front door.
