Part 3: The Trap in the Bedroom
Heavy footsteps sounded on the wooden stairs, coming up fast. I didn’t have time to hide the torn fabric or push the mattress back onto the frame.
I scrambled to my feet, grabbing my phone and the plastic bag containing Elena’s identity documents, and backed into the corner of the bedroom just as the door swung open.
Alejandro stood in the doorway, his black suit jacket draped over his arm. He took one step into the room, and his eyes instantly locked onto the ruined mattress on the floor, the gray tape hanging from the cut foam, and the scattered documents lying on the rug.
The calm, cold demeanor he usually wore completely evaporated. His face twisted into a mask of pure, terrifying rage.
“I told you never to touch that bed, Lucía,” he said, his voice dropping into a low, murderous whisper as he stepped into the room and locked the door behind him.
“She was your wife, wasn’t she?” I choked out, holding the identity card in front of me like a shield, my back pressed flat against the wall. “Elena Morales. You married her three years ago in Monterrey. Where is she, Alejandro? What did you do to her?”
Alejandro let out a short, hollow laugh, taking another deliberate step toward me. “Elena was greedy, Lucía. Just like you’re being right now. She thought she could take half of my assets and go to the authorities.”
He reached into his jacket pocket, his fingers closing around a heavy metal object. “I brought you a life of comfort for eight years. You had everything you wanted. All you had to do was stop asking questions.”
