Part 2: The Return of the Patriarch

Part 5: The Ultimate Father’s Day

Thomas stood up and stepped toward my daughters. From his pocket, he pulled out a second set of documents.

“I bought the specialized pediatric rehabilitation center downtown,” Thomas smiled, looking at Lily and Rose. “It is now fully funded under your names. The best doctors, the best physical therapists, and the advanced robotic exoskeletons are waiting for you tomorrow morning.”

Lily and Rose looked at each other, tears spilling down their cheeks.

Then, they did something that made my heart completely stop.

Without their wheelchairs, holding onto the edges of the dining table, Lily stood up. Beside her, Rose did the same. Slowly, shakily, but with absolute determination, they let go of the table. They took one step. Then another.

They walked right into my arms, wrapping their hands around my neck as I fell to my knees, sobbing into their shoulders. Thomas stepped forward, wrapping his arms around all of us, finally bringing our shattered family back together.

I looked down at the gold watch resting on the table, ticking steadily. The lost years were gone, the debt was paid, and the long, exhausting winter of my life was finally over. I had my family back, and my daughters were finally walking home.
