Part 4: The Fall of the Architect
“You can’t do this to me!” Ashley screamed as the detectives grabbed her wrists, pulling them behind her back. “Michael, tell them! I did this for us! She was nothing! She didn’t deserve you or your money!”
“I never cared about the money, Ashley,” I said, looking down at the woman who had spent a year ruining the lives of the people I loved. “And Emily was everything.”
The steel handcuffs clicked shut around Ashley’s wrists. Her loud, shrill protests echoed across the quiet shelter grounds as she was forced into the back of a state police cruiser. Her lawyers hurried into their own car, desperate to distance themselves from the mountain of criminal indictments heading their way.
As the police cars pulled away, their red and blue lights fading down the rural road, a profound, heavy silence fell over the parking lot.
I turned back around to face Emily.
She stood beside the wooden bench, holding our son and daughter, her shoulders shaking with quiet, overwhelming sobs of relief. The terror that had shadowed her life for twelve agonizing months was finally gone.
I walked over slowly, dropping to my knees on the dusty ground right in front of her.
“Emily,” I choked out, tears finally breaking past my eyes. “I don’t expect you to forgive me. I failed you. I listened to lies, and I let you fight the dark alone. But please… let me fix this. Let me spend every day I have left making sure you and our children never suffer again.”
To see Michael and Emily rebuild their unbroken family, continue reading below for the final part.
