Part 2: The Final Ambush

Part 3: The Counter-Strike

Ashley stepped toward Emily, extending her hands toward the twins. “Hand them over, Emily. Don’t make the officers enforce this.”

“Touch them,” I said, stepping directly into Ashley’s path, “and you’ll be leaving this parking lot in handcuffs.”

Ashley scoffed, rolling her eyes. “On what grounds, Michael? The adoption filing is legal!”

“The adoption filing is built on fraud, wire tampering, and human trafficking,” another voice called out across the lot.

David Reynolds walked out from the shelter office, flanked by two detectives from the Georgia State Police Financial Crimes Unit and an official from the Department of Family and Protective Services.

Ashley froze, her lawyer’s hand instantly dropping to his side.

“Ashley Bennett,” Detective Vance announced, pulling a thick stack of federal arrest warrants from his coat. “You, your brother, and your legal representatives are under official investigation for criminal conspiracy, falsification of court records, and identity fraud.”

“What?!” Ashley shrieked, backing away toward her SUV. “This is absurd! My father is—”

“Your father’s firm was raided two hours ago,” David Reynolds interrupted calmly, holding up a tablet screen showing live news coverage of state troopers outside Bennett Financial. “We recovered the original, unedited hospital intake records from the county server backups. Emily never waived her rights. The signatures on those adoption releases were forged by your brother’s paralegal.”

Ashley’s face drained of every drop of color. She looked at her lawyers, but both men took two deliberate steps away from her, completely disavowing themselves from the collapsing fraud.
