Part 1: The Box Unlocked

Part 4: The Master Plan Unfolded

Eric didn’t even flinch. He slowly closed his legal binder, looking up at the intruder with cold, professional boredom. “Julian Vance,” Eric said smoothly. “I expected you to show up at least two hours ago. You’re losing your speed.”

Julian stepped further into the room, leaning his hands flat against the conference table and glaring down at me. Julian was Nathan’s estranged half-brother—a man who had abandoned Nathan decades ago when their family business collapsed, only to reappear the moment news of Nathan’s wealth circulated in corporate circles.

“This entire will is a fraudulent farce,” Julian snapped, pointing a finger at my chest. “This girl was a volunteer at a hospice ward! She knew my brother for less than two months! She manipulated a terminally ill, cognitively impaired man into signing over his entire life’s work while his real family was kept in the dark!”

“Cognitively impaired?” I stood up, my fear instantly vanishing, replaced by a fierce, protective anger I didn’t know I possessed. “Nathan was sharper than anyone in that building until his final breath! Where were you when he was sitting alone in that room? Where were you when he needed family?”

“It doesn’t matter where I was, little girl,” Julian sneered. “Under state probate law, an unrelated hospice volunteer cannot inherit an entire estate over primary blood relatives without extensive mental competency evaluations. We will tie this up in court until you don’t have a single penny left to pay your legal fees.”

“That would be a terrifying threat, Julian,” Eric interrupted, pulling a sleek silver thumb drive and a blue folder from his drawer, “if Clara were actually an unrelated volunteer.”

Julian froze, his sneer faltering slightly. “What are you talking about?”

“Six months ago, before Nathan ever set foot in that hospice, he submitted his DNA profile to an accredited court-certified forensic lab,” Eric explained, opening the blue folder to reveal certified genetic matching seals. “Alongside a court-recorded video deposition witnessed by two independent supreme court judges, verifying that Clara is his biological daughter and sole legal heir.”

Eric plugged the silver thumb drive into the conference room monitor. Nathan’s face appeared on the large screen—pale, thin, but his blue eyes burning with an absolute, untouchable clarity as he spoke directly to the camera: “If my brother Julian attempts to challenge my daughter Clara’s rightful inheritance, I authorize my legal counsel to release the complete forensic audit of Julian’s corporate tax fraud from 2018 directly to the federal prosecutor.”

Julian’s face turned an instant, horrifying shade of ash-gray. He backed away from the table, his mouth opening and closing without making a sound, before turning on his heel and walking out of the office, his junior associate scrambling behind him in complete silence.
