Part 3: The Secret Estate and the Intruder
“He gave you the choice, Clara,” Eric continued, opening a heavy legal binder on his desk. “When he asked you to pretend to be his daughter, he gave you the power. And for six weeks, you gave a dying man the only thing money could never buy: the unconditional love of his real child.”
I wiped my wet cheeks, looking down at the hand-drawn birth announcement inside the wooden box. The memories of our time together flooded back—taking his wheelchair through the sunlit hospice garden, sharing slices of apple pie at the corner diner, walking along the damp sand at the coast while he looked at me with an intensity I had never understood until this exact moment. He wasn’t roleplaying fatherhood; he was soaking in twenty-four years of missed moments before his heart finally gave out.
“Nathan wasn’t a poor, forgotten patient, Clara,” Eric said, turning the binder toward me. “His engineering firm was acquired three years ago by a national defense contractor. He lived modestly because he spent his final years liquidating his corporate holdings into an untouchable private family trust.”
He pointed to the bottom line of the primary estate document. “The entire estate—valued at eighteen million dollars, including his properties, liquid capital, and patent royalties—was legally transferred into your name forty-eight hours before he passed away.”
Before I could digest the staggering figure, the heavy wooden doors of the conference room burst open.
A sharp-featured man in an expensive navy suit stepped into the office, followed by a junior associate carrying a leather briefcase. His eyes swept over the room with cold, arrogant disdain, stopping directly on me and the wooden box sitting on the glass table.
“I knew I’d find you here, Eric,” the man sneered, adjusting his gold cufflinks. “I suggest you freeze all asset transfers immediately. My legal team has just filed a formal injunction against this estate.”
To see how Nathan anticipated the challenge to his daughter’s inheritance, continue reading below for Part 4.
