My breath caught in my throat. I remembered signing those papers, swept up in the excitement of our upcoming wedding and blinded by the trust I had foolishly placed in her. Ashley had systematically engineered a trap. If I called off the wedding, exposed her lies, or tried to leave her, she would take control of the legacy my father had spent his entire life building.
“You see, Michael,” Ashley whispered, stepping closer, “you can have your precious little broken family back. But it will cost you everything you own. You’ll be just as penniless as she is. So, what is it going to be? Do you marry me and keep your fortune, or do you choose a life of poverty with a woman you already threw out once?”
I stood frozen, the weight of my past mistakes pressing down on my chest like a lead weight. I looked back at Emily. She was holding the twins tightly, her eyes wide with fear, but there was also a quiet dignity in her posture. She had survived a year on the streets, pregnant and alone, without the safety net of my wealth.
“Michael,” Emily said softly, her voice trembling but clear. “Don’t let her threaten you. We don’t need your money. We never did.”
Her words sliced through the fog in my mind. A year ago, I had chosen my pride, my social standing, and my wealth over the woman who had loved me unconditionally. I had allowed myself to be manipulated because it was easier to believe a lie than to do the hard work of seeking the truth. I had lost my wife, missed the birth of my children, and nearly lost my soul. I wasn’t going to make the same mistake twice.
“Take the shares, Ashley,” I said, my voice steadying. “Take the company. Take every single cent.”
Ashley’s smile faltered, replaced by a look of sheer disbelief. “You’re bluffing. You love your status too much, Michael. You won’t survive a day without your country club lifestyle.”
“Try me,” I replied. “I’d rather work a minimum-wage job and sleep on a floor with my family than spend another second sharing a life with a monster like you. The wedding is off. Get out of our sight……”
