Betrayal and Redemption
Ashley stepped out of the black SUV, her designer heels clicking sharply against the gravel of the shelter parking lot. The two men in suits followed closely behind, clutching thick leather briefcases. Her face, which I had once found beautiful, was twisted into a cold, triumphant sneer that made my stomach churn. She looked at Emily with utter disdain before training her eyes on me, her smile widening.
“Did you really think you could slip away and play the hero, Michael?” Ashley asked, her voice dripping with artificial sweetness. “I knew the moment you started digging. You always were so predictable when you felt guilty.”
I stepped between Ashley and Emily, shielding my ex-wife and the sleeping twins from her gaze. “How did you find us, Ashley? Better yet, how do you even sleep at night after what you did? I know everything. I know about the fabricated photos, the bribed witnesses, and the money you routed through your brother. I have the bank statements and the security footage.”
Ashley let out a soft, mocking laugh. She didn’t look panicked. In fact, she looked entirely in control. “Oh, Michael. You think you’ve won because you found some paper trail? You underestimate me. Yes, I made sure Emily was out of the picture. She was a distraction, a middle-class nobody who didn’t deserve you or your family’s estate. But you’re missing the bigger picture. You signed a prenuptial agreement when we got engaged, and more importantly, you signed a joint business partnership agreement last month when we merged our family assets.”
One of the attorneys stepped forward, pulling a document from his folder. “Mr. Carter, as your fiancée’s legal representation, we are here to notify you of a binding clause in your partnership agreement. Any attempt to dissolve your relationship with Ms. Bennett, or any public allegations that damage her reputation or the reputation of Bennett Holdings, triggers an immediate transfer of fifty-one percent of your company’s voting shares to her…..”
