A FATHER’S LONELY PROMISE

I became a father at seventeen. You know how it happens — intense high school love. When my girlfriend got pregnant, it was overwhelming, but I accepted responsibility.

I worked and studied at the same time to give my child everything she needed. I promised that we would get married. By the time I graduated from high school, my daughter Ainsley was already beside me.

It wasn’t easy, but I was grateful. I love Ainsley deeply, and I don’t regret anything. After we finished school, my girlfriend told me that becoming a mother was making her unhappy and that she still felt too young for that life, and then she left.

She moved away to college and never returned. She never once asked about her daughter. So I raised her on my own. She grew into an incredible young woman — Ainsley is kind, optimistic, and thoughtful.

When her graduation arrived 18 years later, I stood there watching her onstage, and I was nearly overwhelmed with pride. Ainsley then went out to celebrate with her friends and came home late that evening.

She hurried upstairs to her room. A few minutes later, someone knocked on the door. When I opened it, two police officers were standing on my porch. My stomach tightened instantly.

One of them greeted me politely and asked: “Are you Ainsley’s father?” I immediately felt nervous. “Yes… what happened?” The officers exchanged glances.

Then the officer continued: “SIR, DO YOU EVEN REALIZE WHAT YOUR DAUGHTER DID TONIGHT?” My heart pounded heavily in my chest. Then he added, “You deserve to hear this.”
