“Sterling Memorial was built on care, service, and integrity,” I said into the microphone, my voice steady and resolute. “As majority shareholder, my first act is to dissolve the proposed private acquisition immediately. My second act is the immediate termination of Grant Holloway and Vanessa Pike from all administrative and medical duties at this institution, effective this second.”
Grant stared at me, his face pale, his mouth slightly open. The power he had spent a decade building, the authority he had wielded as a weapon against me, had vanished in less than ten minutes.
“Natalie… please,” Grant whispered, taking a step toward me, his voice trembling as the reality of his ruin set in. “We can talk about this. Think of our family.”
“I am thinking of my family,” I said quietly, looking him straight in the eyes. “I’m thinking of Lily. And I am honoring my father.”
I turned away from him and looked out at the board. “Tomorrow morning at eight, we begin rebuilding Sterling Memorial. Security will escort Mr. Holloway and Ms. Pike off the premises tonight.”
Two uniformed security officers, the very men Grant had used to threaten me the day before, stepped onto the stage. Grant didn’t say another word as he was led out into the cool evening air, leaving behind the kingdom he had tried so hard to steal, and discovering too late that the woman he dismissed was the one who held the keys all along.
