At 41, I got pregnant by an 18-year-old. “That guy’s probably not very smart,” he said, looking at me. Ten years later, at the delivery, everything I had built with his mistress crumbled in three seconds.
“I miss you already. It was amazing last night,” he said, his phone vibrating on the table. When I confronted him, he didn’t even bother to lie.
“Her name is Daniela,” he said, tucking his shirt up. “She’s eighteen.” I felt the floor give way. “Did you leave your wife and newborn for a girl?”
Ricardo burst out laughing. “Don’t be dramatic, Carmen. You’re already grown up. I still want to live.” I was left speechless.
Then he looked at the crib where Emiliano was sleeping, oblivious to everything, and spat out the sentence that would accompany me for fifteen years: “Besides, the son of an old woman like you probably won’t give birth to anyone.” Two days later, he left.
She took nothing but her last name, her pride, and the little dignity she had left. I was left with a baby, a debt, and a heart full of anger.
And when I thought it couldn’t hurt anymore, Daniela posted a photo hugging Ricardo with the line: “Finally, someone who knows how to enjoy life.”
