I closed the bedroom door behind us, shutting out the noise of the house. The atmosphere was quiet, warm, and safe.
Emily stood near the edge of the bed, her shoulders trembling as the adrenaline of the moment began to fade. She looked at me, her eyes filled with a mixture of relief, exhaustion, and lingering disbelief.
“I thought… I thought you had forgotten about me,” she whispered softly, her voice barely audible. “They kept telling me you were too busy for me now. They said I was just a reminder of your past that you didn’t need anymore.”
Heartbroken by her words, I walked over to her, taking both of her hands into mine once more.
“I could never forget you,” I said softly. “Everything I built was for us. But I made a terrible mistake by leaving you vulnerable to people who only saw us as a resource to exploit. I promises you, Emily, that will never happen again.”
Reaching inside my inner jacket pocket, I finally brought out the small velvet box I had carried across the world. I opened it gently, revealing the brilliant diamond necklace shining beneath the room’s soft light.
Emily gasped softly, looking from the jewels up to my eyes.
“This was meant to be a surprise to mark the end of my travel,” I said, carefully unclasping the chain and placing it around her neck, letting the diamond rest against her chest. “It’s a reminder that no matter how much the world around us changes, what we built together is real, and it belongs to you.”
Emily touched the diamond lightly with her fingertips, fresh tears falling down her cheeks—this time, tears of peace. She leaned into my arms, resting her head against my chest as I held her close.
Downstairs, the distant sound of raised voices fading into the driveway signaled that my relatives were finally leaving, their brief reign over my home brought to a decisive end. But inside our room, the house was finally quiet again. The noise of ambition and greed had cleared away, leaving only the steady, unbroken promise we had made to each other years ago.
