Margaret frowned, setting down her golden glass with an annoyed huff. “What is the meaning of this? Who interrupted the—”
Her voice stopped dead in her throat as her eyes landed on me. Beside me stood Emily, wearing my coat, her hands wrapped in mine. Behind us, Ashley stood near the doorway, looking terrified.
“Daniel?” Margaret squeaked, her voice instantly losing its theatrical confidence. “You… you weren’t supposed to be home until next month.”
“Clearly,” I said, my voice quiet, controlled, and echoing clearly off the high marble ceilings. “If I had called ahead, you would have had time to hide the fact that you turned my home into a resort and treated my wife like an unpaid laborer.”
Murmurs rippled through the gathered crowd. The guests looked uncomfortably at one another, suddenly realizing that the endless wealth they had been enjoying belonged to a man who had just returned home unannounced.
“Daniel, darling, don’t make a scene in front of our friends,” Margaret tried again, attempting to assume her motherly, persuasive tone as she stood up from the table. “We were only managing the property because Emily was clearly overwhelmed. We took the burden off her shoulders so she wouldn’t stress over running an estate like this!”
“You didn’t take a burden off her shoulders, Mother,” I replied, opening the black leather folder in my hand. “You isolated her. You cut off her access to our shared accounts, changed the security codes, took away her personal vehicle under the guise of ‘maintenance,’ and used my hard-earned money to fund your own ostentatious vanity.”
I pulled out a stack of legally binding documents and tossed them onto the center of the dining table, right into the middle of their feast.
“Effective immediately,” I announced, turning my gaze toward Michael and Ashley as well, “every secondary credit card issued under my corporate and personal accounts has been canceled. The lease agreements on the luxury vehicles parked in the driveway have been terminated, and tow trucks are currently on their way to impound them.”
Michael gasped, jumping out of his chair. “You can’t do that! That’s my car!”
“That car was purchased with my money, registered under my firm, and intended for family use under the assumption that you were supporting my wife,” I snapped, stepping forward with a cold severity that made my brother shrink back into his seat. “Every dollar you spent was logged. And every dollar will be accounted for.”
I turned back to Margaret, whose hands were shaking as she looked at the legal paperwork on the table.
“These are formal eviction notices,” I continued smoothly. “You have exactly one hour to pack your personal belongings and clear out of this estate. If anyone listed on these papers is still on the premises when sixty minutes have passed, my legal team will file formal charges for grand larceny, emotional distress, and unlawful occupation.”
“You would do this to your own family?” Margaret cried out, tears of anger and panic springing to her eyes. “After everything I did for you? After raising you? You’re throwing your own mother out for her?” She gestured contemptuously toward Emily.
“Emily is the only reason I have anything worth coming home to,” I said, holding my wife’s hand tighter. “She believed in me when I had nothing. You only cared about me when I had everything to offer you. You didn’t love me; you loved the lifestyle my labor provided.”
I turned toward the remaining guests, who were standing frozen in awkward embarrassment. “The party is over. Please leave my home immediately.”
Within seconds, the room emptied as guests rushed toward the exit, anxious to avoid being caught in the fallout of a family collapse. Michael and Ashley scrambled upstairs to pack whatever they could, arguing loudly with each other in desperate panic, while Margaret sat frozen at the table, staring at the legal papers in disbelief before finally retreating to gather her things.
Outside, the heavy sound of front doors opening signaled the arrival of my private security detail and a fresh locks service, who immediately set to work replacing every access key in the house.
I led Emily away from the chaos, guiding her upstairs into our master suite—the one room my family had been strictly locked out of by the electronic security system I had personally programmed before leaving.
