Margaret fell into a chair, her confidence completely shattered. She tried to cry, appealing to my sense of family, but the tears were empty, driven by the realization that her comfort and status had vanished in an instant. Paige stood frozen, realizing that the life of luxury she had bragged about online was over.
I turned away from them, refusing to give their desperate pleas any more of my attention. I knelt beside Gwen, took her frail hand in mine, and smiled softly.
“Pack a small bag, Gwen,” I said gently. “Our car is waiting outside. We’re going to the hospital, and after that, we’re going home.”
Gwen looked at me, a tear rolling down her cheek, but for the first time in four long years, it was not a tear of fear or pain. It was a tear of relief. As we walked out the front door together, leaving the chaos behind us, I knew the road to recovery would be long, but we were finally moving forward, and justice had finally been served.
