Agent Miller picked up the notebook, flipped through the pages with an experienced eye, and nodded slowly to her partner standing near the door.

“Mr. Harper,” Agent Miller said, pulling a pair of handcuffs from her belt. “You are under arrest for corporate fraud, embezzlement, obstruction of justice, and the unlawful attempt to frame an individual for federal crimes. You have the right to remain silent.”

As the officer stepped forward to place the cold steel cuffs around Grant’s wrists, he looked at me, not with anger, but with a profound, terrifying realization. For nearly twenty years, he had believed he was the smartest person in every room we entered. He had believed he could manipulate reality, rewrite facts, and convince me that my own senses were untrustworthy.

He had forgotten that while he was busy crafting lies, I was trained to analyze the evidence.

“Evelyn,” he whispered as they turned him toward the door. “Please. We can talk about this.”

“We’ve talked enough, Grant,” I said softly.

I watched as they led him down the hallway toward the holding facility, followed shortly by Layla, who was crying uncontrollably as her own rights were read to her.

I picked up my leather notebook, zipped my handbag, and stepped out into the main terminal. The bright sunlight streamed through the high glass windows of O’Hare International Airport, washing over the crowded walkways and bustling boarding gates. For the first time in years, the weight in my chest was completely gone. I adjusted my coat, walked toward the airline customer service counter, and booked a one-way ticket to a destination of my own choosing.
