The rulebook strictly forbade feeding human food to the animals under any circumstances, but looking at Snowball’s innocent, hopeful face was too much for Gary to bear.
“Just a small piece,” Gary whispered, breaking off a warm, chocolate-covered corner of the pastry. “If anyone asks, you found it.”
Gary reached down toward the low feeding hatch and slid the piece through the narrow gap in the stone wall.
Snowball’s hand moved with lightning speed, catching the morsel before it even touched the wood shavings.
He popped the treat into his mouth, his eyes rolling back in sheer bliss as the sweet chocolate and banana flavors exploded across his tongue. 😋
It was a taste of pure freedom, far superior to any plain fruit salad he had ever been served.
In that very second, Snowball realized something profound.
Why escape the zoo and deal with the wild, scary outside world where he would have to hunt for food and dodge rainstorms?
Why waste hours filing down metal keys in the dark when he held a far more powerful weapon right in his hands?
His intelligence wasn’t meant for breaking out; it was meant for breaking hearts and getting endless treats.
He had the ultimate superpower: he was impossibly cute, ridiculously rare, and brilliant enough to act like a sweet toddler whenever food was nearby.
Snowball immediately changed his long-term strategy.
He looked up at Gary, gave him another soft, appreciative pat on the arm, and then slowly curled back down into his famous sleeping pose against the rock wall.
He crossed his arms tightly under his chin, closed his eyes, and allowed that same peaceful, innocent smirk to settle over his pink face.
Gary chuckled warmly, shaking his head as he finished his coffee.
“You’re a special guy, Snowball,” Gary murmured, tapping the glass softly before continuing his daily patrol down the hall. “I’ll bring you another one tomorrow.”
As the guard’s footsteps faded into the distance, Snowball let out a low, satisfied breath through his nostrils.
Underneath his curled leg, his toes gently pushed the useless metal file deep into the cedar bedding, burying his escape plans forever.
He didn’t need a key to the kitchen anymore.
He had turned the entire security staff and every visiting tourist into his personal room service team without ever having to leave his cozy rock corner.
