“You’re destroying our family’s name!” Patricia gasped, her voice trembling with rage and disbelief as the officers began leading Nicholas and Gregory down the hall. “I will have every lawyer in North Carolina on this by morning!”

“Bring them all, Patricia,” I said, turning my back on her to sit beside my daughter once again. “They will be fighting against forty-eight hours of high-definition security footage, forensic fingerprint analysis, and the full weight of the federal justice system.”

As the sounds of raised voices and echoing footsteps faded down the corridor, the hospital room returned to a quiet, peaceful stillness. I wrapped my arm around Abigail’s shoulders and pulled her close against my side. She rested her head against my chest, right over the gold nameplate bearing our family name.

“It’s over, baby,” I whispered softly, kissing the top of her head as the final rays of evening light faded through the window. “You’re safe now. Nobody is ever going to hurt you again.”
