🔮 The Secret Language of Scent 👇

My left hand was splayed flat on the kitchen floor. As my fingers twitched, they
brushed against something small, smooth, and crinkled. A plastic packet. I
traced the shape of it—the notched tear-strip at the top, the thick, viscous
liquid sealed inside.

It was a tube of fast-acting glucose gel.

I kept a box of them in the very bottom of my heavy canvas backpack, tucked
beneath my braille notebook, a spare sweater, and my folding cane case. I had
never told my dad about them. I hated the tiny, foil-lined tubes; to me, they
were physical proof of my body’s betrayal, a reminder that my blood sugar could
drop without warning, dragging my hard-won independence down with it.

“Where did…” I mumbled, my fingers tightening around the plastic packet. “How
did you find this, Dad?”

“I didn’t,” my father said. His voice cracked, the sound of a man who had
suddenly lost his footing on familiar ground. “Nora… the dog did.”

I lay there, the cold of the kitchen floor seeping through my shirt, listening
to the rain beat a frantic tattoo against the windowpane while my father
explained what had happened in the terrifying minutes after I lost
consciousness.

“You collapsed,” Dad whispered, his hand still resting on my shoulder, his
knuckles brushing against Walter’s coarse fur. “You fell hard, Nora. Your head
missed the edge of the kitchen table by inches. I panicked. I was reaching for
the phone to dial 911, but before I could even get the operator, Walter was
already moving.”

Dad took a shaky breath, and I felt a tear drop onto my bare wrist. “He didn’t
run around or bark. He went straight to your backpack hanging on the kitchen
chair. He grabbed the strap in his teeth, dragged the whole bag off the chair,
and pinned it to the floor with his paws. Then he used his muzzle to root
through the front pocket until he ripped the zipper open. He pulled that gel
tube out, brought it right to your head, and then… he just lay down on you.”…..
