🔮 The Secret Language of Scent 👇

When the darkness finally began to splinter, it did not come with light. It came
with the taste of copper on the back of my tongue and the cold, unyielding
pressure of the linoleum against my left cheek. The air smelled strongly of
scorched toast and lemon-scented floor wax, but closer, right against my face,
was the rich, damp aroma of wet wool, cedar, and old dog fur. 🐕

A heavy, warm weight pressed against my ribcage, rhythmic and steady. It was
Walter. He was lying directly across my chest, his front paws draped over my
shoulders. He was not shaking, nor was he pacing. He was breathing in deep,
synchronized drafts, pushing his cool muzzle right into the hollow of my throat.
Every few seconds, a low vibration rumbled through his ribs—not a growl, but a
rhythmic, targeted hum that pulsed against my collarbone.

“Nora? Nora, sweetheart, stay still. Don’t try to get up yet.”

My father’s voice was right beside my ear. It sounded rough, stripped of its
usual protective authority, vibrating with a raw, thin terror I had never heard
in all my nineteen years. I tried to lift my head, but the kitchen swam in a
greasy wave of nausea.

“Dad?” My voice was a dry, useless rasp.

“I’m here. I’m right here.” A hand, heavy and trembling, smoothed the hair back
from my forehead. “The paramedics are on their way. Just keep breathing. Walter,
stay. Good boy, stay.”…..
