Two Worlds, One Touch
With the patriarch’s approval, the two young primates turned their full attention back to Lily. The contrast was breathtaking. On one side of the glass was a little human girl in a bright, colorful hoodie covered in cartoon dinosaurs, her face glowing with pure, unadulterated joy. On the other side were two young souls of the forest—one dark as midnight, the other white as fresh snow.
The dark juvenile was bold. He pressed his face close, his dark eyes wide and full of mischief, mimicking Lily’s expressions. He would pull his hand back, tap the glass rapidly, and then place his palm back in the exact spot where Lily’s hand rested.
The white infant, however, was hesitant and incredibly gentle. Its pale, pink-toned fingers touched the glass with a delicate precision, as if trying to feel the warmth of the little girl on the other side. Its eyes, a soft, pale hazel, held a depth of curiosity that felt intensely human.
“Look, Mommy, they have fingers just like me,” Lily whispered, her voice dropping to a reverent tone.
“They do, sweetie,” I murmured, blinking back tears. “They’re showing you their hands.”
“Can they come home with us? We have cookies.”
“I don’t think they’d fit in the car, baby.”
“We can put them in the trunk! With the strollers!”
A soft chuckle rippled through the nearby crowd, breaking the solemn spell. The sheer innocence of her offer seemed to resonate with everyone standing there……
