THE SHADOW OF JUSTICE

The arrival of a new inmate to the women’s prison aroused the curiosity of all from the first moment. His appearance was impossible to ignore. The tattoos covered his arms, neck and chest. She spoke very little, avoided attracting attention and always remained alone, as if she wanted to go completely unnoticed.

In prison the rumors were born quickly, especially when someone new was entering. However, that woman did not feed any history. He obeyed the orders of the guards without arguing, did not seek problems and never engaged in conflicts of others.

But there was a reality that any newcomer ended up discovering very soon. Within those walls there was a woman they all feared. His name was Vanessa. It was enough to see it appear so that the environment changed completely. The conversations went out and many inmates lowered their heads as they walked away.

His presence imposed respect. He grazed the two meters high, had a huge constitution and a force that seemed enormous. There was a rumor that a single blow of his was enough to knock anyone unconscious. Over the years he had built a real realm of intimidation. Some washed their clothes. Others cleaned his cell. Many delivered some of their food. And there were few who agreed to do the most unpleasant tasks solely to avoid facing it.

Nobody wanted to challenge her. Vanessa enjoyed demonstrating her power before all, publicly humiliating whoever would cross her path to remember that she was the one who was sending there. For several days he did not even notice the new intern. Until lunchtime.

The dining room was full. The inmates occupied the long metal tables while talking quietly. The newcomer remained alone, eating quietly in a corner. Then Vanessa saw her. He watched her for a moment from the other end of the dining room. A mocking smile appeared on her face before slowly walking toward her.

Little by little the silence began to spread. Many interns stopped talking. Some even pulled the tray away. They all knew what was about to happen. When Vanessa chose a victim, she almost never ended well. He stopped in front of the table and caught his gaze on the food of the stranger. “Hey… give me your lunch.”

The young woman looked up without losing her calm. “It’s my food. If you’re hungry, get yours.” The nearest inmates exchanged surprised glances. No one remembered hearing such an answer. The tattooed woman was still completely serene.

Vanessa frowned. “I’m still hungry. Give it to me. You won’t die for a day without eating.” “No.” The answer was brief, firm and quiet. Without the slightest trace of fear. As if in front of her was not the most dangerous woman in the whole prison.

For a few seconds the dining room was completely silent. Many understood that it would end the worst way. Vanessa’s gesture changed immediately. I was used to everyone obeying without question. Someone had never told him not so directly. In a sharp motion he grabbed the metal tray and threw it hard. The rice, meat and vegetables were scattered all over the ground.

A murmur walked through the dining room. Vanessa smiled with contempt as she looked at the young woman. “Do you have any idea who I am?” The newcomer remained silent. “Kneel right now. You’re gonna regret challenging me.”

But the woman didn’t even move. She continued to sit, watching her with a serenity that puzzled everyone. That attitude ended up getting Vanessa crazy. Without saying one more word, he held her tightly by the shoulder and tried to rip her off the bench.

Several internals looked away, convinced that in a few seconds the newcomer would end up on the ground begging for mercy. What Vanessa could not imagine was that she had just made the biggest mistake since she had set foot in that prison. Because that silent woman covered in tattoos hid a past that no one could imagine. And in a matter of seconds, the whole dining room would find out who the new intern really was…
