PART 2: THE UNTOLD PROMISE
From behind her back, Grace pulled out a heavy, tarnished silver key and a worn leather journal tied with a thick black ribbon.
My chest tightened as she laid both items on the foot of my bed, her hands trembling so severely that she had to press them against her knees to keep still.
“David didn’t adopt me because of a secret affair,” Grace whispered, tears filling her dark eyes. “He adopted me because he was trying to pay off a debt that nearly destroyed his soul sixteen years ago.”
I sat up slowly, staring at the leather notebook that bore my late husband’s unmistakable handwriting across the front cover.
Grace wiped a stray tear from her cheek and took a deep breath before opening the first page, revealing a newspaper clipping from a decade and a half prior.
“Sixteen years ago, David was involved in a terrible car accident during a midnight snowstorm,” she explained softly, her voice barely audible over the pounding in my ears.
“My biological parents were in the other vehicle, and David was the sole survivor who carried me out of the wreckage before the flames consumed everything else.”
