PART 2: THE SACRED GUARDIAN
The letter began in Rosie’s neat, careful handwriting: “If you are reading this, it means my heart finally got tired, but I need you to know the truth about the night our family fell apart ten years ago.”
Tears blurred my eyes as I remembered the terrible winter night our parents’ store caught fire, leaving our family bankrupt and desperate, forcing us to rebuild our lives from absolute nothing.
Rosie wrote that on the night of the fire, she had seen the real culprit—a powerful local property developer who set the blaze for insurance money and threatened to harm our family if anyone ever spoke up.
Rosie had quietly recorded the developer’s confession on her old tablet, but she was too terrified to tell our parents or the police, fearing for our safety.
The only person she confided in was Ben, her high school tutor and my best friend, begging him to help her hide the evidence until the statute of limitations allowed for a federal prosecution.
Ben realized that the only legal way to grant her total protection and ensure no one could force her to testify alone was to tie his life permanently to hers through marriage.
