An Unexpected Ally
As the purple fog began to thin out under the bright afternoon sun, a strange sound drifted up from the ground. It wasn’t the ticking of a machine, but a soft, rhythmic chirping. Marcus leaned over the edge, his dark brow furrowed in deep concentration. Nestled right beside the dropped backpack, completely unaffected by the vapor, was a tiny, mechanical drone shaped like a golden beetle. It vibrated violently, its wings spinning at high speed, creating a miniature vortex that was actively sucking the purple mist back into a small canister on its underside.
“Look, Papa! It’s eating the smoke!” Kojo squealed, his fear suddenly replaced by the intense curiosity only a young gorilla could possess.
“Stay back,” Marcus cautioned, though he relaxed his defensive posture slightly. “It is human magic. Sometimes good, sometimes bad.”
Evelyn’s voice suddenly crackled through the enclosure’s overhead speakers, sounding metallic and distant.
“Marcus, it’s okay now. The containment drone cleared the accidental chemical spill from the visitor path. The air is safe. Come down to the gate for treats.”
Marcus let out a low, rumbling grunt that sounded remarkably like a human sigh. He looked down at the head of romaine lettuce he had abandoned on the rock below. It was now completely covered in a fine layer of purple residue. His lunch was ruined.
“My yellow leaf is gone too,” Kojo whimpered, looking sadly at the ground where his favorite toy had fallen into a puddle.
“A leaf can be replaced, little prince,” Marcus said gently, setting the youngster down on the warm wooden planks. “And your stomach is louder than a lion’s roar right now.”
