PART 2: THE DIPLOMATIC ESCORT
“Commander Carter,” the lead guard said, his voice carrying absolute firmness. “His Majesty King Leopold has personally ordered a private military transport to bring you directly to the estate.”
I stood frozen on my front step, trying to process the magnitude of what was happening on my quiet neighborhood street.
“My sister didn’t invite me,” I said plainly, keeping my posture rigid. “She made it very clear that my presence was not welcome.”
The officer offered a tight, solemn smile. “With all due respect, Commander, this request does not come from your sister. It comes directly from the Monarch, and it takes precedence over the bride’s wishes.”
Within twenty minutes, I was seated inside a high-speed diplomatic vehicle, surrounded by an escort that cleared traffic all the way to the naval air station airfield.
A sleek private transport plane waited on the tarmac, its engines already roaring as the rear stairs lowered for my arrival.
As the aircraft climbed into the clouds toward the private European island where the reception was being held, I stared out the window, wondering what could have possibly prompted the King to intervene so drastically.
