I adopted a sixteen-year-old girl to honor my dying husband’s final request. But the day after his funeral, she stepped into my bedroom and whispered, “It’s time you discovered who your husband truly was.”
David and I had shared fifteen years of marriage, two children, and the kind of love that still felt gentle after all that time. He would warm my side of the bed before I climbed beneath the blankets and reach for my hand without thinking.
Then one sentence from the doctor shattered everything. “Stage four. There is no cure. We can only keep him comfortable.”
David began disappearing before my eyes. Yet I knew his illness was not the only burden weighing on him. Some nights, he stared at the ceiling with fear and guilt written across his face.
Then one evening, he handed me a worn photograph. A serious-looking sixteen-year-old girl stared back at me.
“Her name is Grace,” David whispered. “I need you to adopt her before I die.”
My entire body went cold. “Who is she? Is she your daughter?”
David closed his eyes. “I’ll tell you everything. But first, please bring her home.”
Most people probably would have refused. But I loved him too much to deny what might be his final wish.
Grace arrived carrying a faded backpack and a plastic bag filled with clothes. At first, I watched her carefully, unable to silence my suspicions.
Our children accepted her immediately. She helped with meals, homework, and David’s care. Whenever she sat beside him, his exhausted face softened and he smiled again.
But they were keeping something from me. Grace often entered David’s room and closed the door behind her. Their conversations were quiet and secretive. Once, I heard her crying through the wall.
Whenever I questioned David, he gave me the same answer. “Later. You’ll understand later.”
Two weeks afterward, he died in the hospital. The day after the funeral, Grace appeared in my bedroom doorway, her face completely drained of color.
“There is something you need to know,” she said. “You have no idea who your husband really was.”
“What is this, Grace?” I asked. “David has barely been buried. Can’t it wait?”
She reached behind her back and revealed something that made every muscle in my body tense.
