PART 3: THE CONFRONTATION AT DUSK
“Dad, please, you have to undo this!” Michael pleaded, his voice cracking through the speaker. “The bank is threatening to freeze our main accounts! Emily’s parents are still staying with us!”
“You were comfortable using my emergency credit card to buy status for your in-laws, Michael,” I replied calmly, my voice unyielding. “You treated my hard work as your personal piggy bank while offering me absolute disrespect.”
He tried to shift the blame onto Emily, claiming she had pressured him to impress her wealthy parents, but I refused to accept his weak excuses.
Thirty minutes later, tires screeched on my driveway. Michael rushed up the front steps alone, his face flushed red against the falling snow as I opened the heavy front door.
He stood on the porch where I had once taught him how to tie his shoes, looking at me with a mixture of terror, anger, and deep shame.
“I spent twenty-seven years building that trust after your mother passed,” I said, looking him dead in the eye. “It was created to support family, not to buy Rolexes for people who look down on us.”
